Aloo chop, boiled potatoes cooked with ginger and onions, made into roundels, dipped in gram flour (Besan) batter and deep fried.This is a very common snack time specialty in Odisha.

Ingredients for 2 Portions:

 

  • 400g potatoes
  • 3-4 onions, chopped finely
  • 3 cups bengal gram flour (besan)
  • 3-4 green chillies
  • 1 piece of ginger (small)
  • 2 tbsp cloves garlic
  • Grated coconut
  • Sugar to taste
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • A few sprigs of coriander leaves, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Refined Oil for deep frying
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of baking soda

 

 

 
Preparation:

 

 

  1. Pressure cook the potatoes till soft.
  2. Peel and mash. Set aside.
  3. Blend together the green chilies, garlic and ginger to a fine paste.
  4. Mix together the potato, onions, ginger/garlic/ chili paste, coriander leaves, sugar, lime juice and salt to taste.
  5. Heat a little oil and add the mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  6. When the mustard crackles, remove from heat and add to the potato mixture. Mix well.
  7. Make a smooth batter with the bengal gram flour, salt to taste, cumin seeds, red chili powder and turmeric powder.
  8. Add a teaspoon of hot oil when making the batter. Let the batter remain thick.
  9. Divide the potato mixture into equal sized portions, the size of a lemon.
  10. Dip each ball in the batter and deep fry till golden brown in color.
  11. Serve hot with chutney/ketchup.

Bill to rename Orissa to Odisha passed in LS

 

The Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2010 and Constitution (113th Amendment) Bill, 2010 for change of language were moved by Home Minister P Chidambaram on the basis of resolutions passed by the Orissa Assembly.

The Bills provide for change of name of state to Odisha and language to Odia. Bills were passed by division of votes with all 294 members present in the House voting in favour and none against..
